A week ago, Hurricane Sandy gathered water and wind and headed towards us. A year ago, it snowed in October. Fall becomes a season of torment. Three years ago, it just gave us lovely colors in the leaves. Two years ago I hiked a rocky trail. This month, I hobble with a limp. We swim in time, its eddies and pools deceive us into forgetting we head toward the sharp rocks of the waterfall. Next month, with luck and surgery, I will walk with aplomb once more . . . until time once again knocks me upon the rocks.
