Winter Rookery

February clings to us. The crows cling to their rookery. Not far from my house, they congregate each evening in raucous chorus among the lacy branches of barren trees.  A river of crows flows in from the west, another from the east and north. Thousands upon thousands cluster, then skitter across the sky, then cluster again. Swooping streaks of black in the winter night.
